We're home!
And has gotton so big.
Hoping your little man will heal quickly!
When I was 12, I broke the growth plate in my foot. Or fractured it. Or something, I don't really remember. Anyway, they casted it, it healed, and they called it a day.
But it never felt quite right and a year later, I was back in the x-ray room while they took a look at things. This time, they referred my parents to a pediatric podiatrist. The guy had foot-shaped business cards, how cool is that?! Lol. Anyway, he had this theory that the best thing to do was to maybe splint it and get a person to use the foot again, that the foot had to heal under pressure to be fully effective.
So they re-broke/fractured the growth plate (OW!) and set me up in running shoes that had extra support in that area of my foot and then just had me walk around on it. I've never had a problem since.
A few years ago, I fractured my wrist. The doctor wanted to cast it, but I remembered the podiatrist and I asked if it was possible to just splint it and have me use it so that it continued to strengthen and heal during use.
Best choice I've ever made. The doctor told me I'd probably have lasting problems from that fracture, but I've found that whenever I do have problems (like if I fall down on it), it is best and most quickly healed when I use it. The last time I fell down on it, I was worried that I'd fractured it again, so I consulted the doctor about it. He said that he never thought he'd ever say this, but he thought my splint idea might have been one of my better choices because although the fall should have re-fractured that area of my wrist, instead it was fine, the area of my bone was just in pain because it was stressed.
So there's my first-hand experience with the splint and use it philosophy. Obviously it doesn't work for everyone, but I hope it helps =) Good luck!
